The vibrant colors of the art gallery seemed to mock her. Across the room, Jake was holding court, surrounded by a group of admiring people. He was elaborating on the complex nature of his "curatorial work." Meanwhile, she knew he worked at the grocery store.

Her hands clenched. She felt a warmth in her face, and it didn’t feel pleasant. She knew she should have said something, but the opportunity was always whisked away by the next elaborate lie.

The gallery had seemed like a good idea. Now, she simply wanted to leave.
