The silence in the car was heavier than the humid summer air. He’d been unusually quiet all day. She kept glancing at his hands, which were resting on the steering wheel, knuckles white. The phone had been ringing incessantly earlier, during their date, which he'd stepped away from multiple times. It was a pattern, one she couldn’t quite decipher, but it certainly was giving her the feeling of something being awry. Finally, she broke the silence, her voice flat. "Who were you talking to?" He stiffened, his gaze fixed on the road.
