"Oh, for crying out loud," Maya muttered, the sound barely a whisper as she stared at the friend request. It was from Kyle Peterson. Her stomach did a flip. He had always been so cruel to her, stealing her lunch and laughing at her clothes. She pictured his sneering face.

She slammed her laptop shut. The sudden noise echoed in her otherwise quiet apartment. She paced back and forth, unable to settle. Every single memory of him, from her childhood, was still so clear. She imagined him trying to be friendly, asking what she was up to. She bit her lip hard. Her fingers itched to block him immediately, but a flicker of morbid curiosity held her back.
