The postman was gone, just like that, as if he’d delivered nothing more than a casual joke. Liam’s hand tightened around the handle of his overflowing trash can. He’d been expecting an important document, and all he'd found was the usual junk. Then, beneath the flyers and coupons, a vibrant birthday card. Unsigned.

He wanted to scream. He wanted to throw the whole lot into the street. Instead, he just stood there, the weight of the trash can suddenly feeling unbearable.

He stomped back to his apartment, the card clutched in his sweaty hand. He tossed the card onto the counter. He decided he wouldn’t open it.
