The car ride back from their grandfather's estate was torture. The air conditioner was on, but it seemed to blow hot air, matching the heat radiating from Liam. His sister, Chloe, was practically bouncing in the seat, already talking about the diamond ring.

“It could pay off my student loans!” Chloe exclaimed, her voice buzzing with excitement. Liam stared out the window, the passing scenery a blur.

He knew his grandfather would have hated this – the rush to sell off his things. He gripped the steering wheel so hard his knuckles were white. “Maybe we should just think about it,” he mumbled, trying to keep his voice level. He wanted this conversation to end.
