The cheap plastic chair creaked under the weight of Coach Davies. He ran a hand through his already messy hair, pulling at the roots. The gym lights hummed, amplifying the silence. The meeting with the parents was in thirty minutes. Thirty minutes to break a young man's heart, and then listen to their complaints.

He reviewed the scouting reports again, each one a stab of guilt. He had to be fair, he had to make the right call. But he could feel his stomach churning. He didn’t want to see the disappointment on young Ben’s face.

He picked up a pen and started scribbling on a notepad, the ink bleeding through the cheap paper. He felt a muscle in his jaw twitch. Damn this job.
