The elegant script of the rejection letter taunted him from the coffee table. He shoved it under the sofa, a futile attempt to make it disappear. It was a failure. He was a failure.

He grabbed his coat, moving with sharp, jerky motions. He needed to get out, to breathe. He threw the door open, slamming it shut behind him with unnecessary force.

He stomped down the street, his head down, his shoulders hunched. The city lights blurred in his vision. He wanted to scream. He wanted to give up. He just kept walking.
