“Fine,” he said to the wall, although there was no one present to hear him. His voice was a harsh whisper. He was alone in the lab, staring at the empty petri dishes. The sterile environment seemed to amplify his sense of disquiet.

He turned away from the equipment and paced restlessly. He ran a hand through his hair, mussing it up even further. He wanted to break something, anything. The thought of all the unfinished experiments, the data that might never see the light of day, was a source of mounting agitation.
