“Well, congratulations, again,” Ben said, the words tasting like ash in his mouth. He managed a smile, but it felt strained, unnatural. He watched as Susan, now his *superior*, beamed, surrounded by her congratulatory circle.

He excused himself, the noise level too high, the air too thick. He retreated to his cubicle, the familiar beige walls suddenly feeling claustrophobic.

He sat down, and without realizing it, started to tap his foot. The rapid drumming was the only rhythm that made sense. He knew everyone expected him to be happy, but he was far from it.
