The sunlight blazed through the kitchen window, hitting Amelia directly in the face. She blinked, pushing back a stray strand of hair. It was already too hot. She'd told her sister, "Leave it to me, I'll clear out the loft!"

She hefted a box of old documents, the cardboard groaning under the weight. She wasn’t sure how many more trips she could make up and down the creaky stairs before she collapsed. Inside, beneath a pile of old tax returns, she found it. A letter. Her stepmother's familiar handwriting. A letter of resignation from a job at the local library.

Amelia felt the muscles in her jaw tighten. She read it, the words seemingly mocking her. The reason? The letter was…vague. "Personal reasons." Just…that. The paper felt flimsy and cheap under her fingertips. She chucked it back in the box. Damn everything. She turned away from the light and went in search of a cold drink.
