Rain slicked the gravel drive, mirroring the sheen of anger that coated Sarah’s face. She stopped the car, engine still running, and stared at the gap. The old apple tree, planted by her father twenty years ago, was gone. Just a muddy hole remained.

She slammed the car door with unnecessary force. That was a lovely tree. It produced the best apples. She thought of calling her neighbor and letting him know how she felt about this act of vandalism. He'd never liked the tree.
