“Well, this is just great,” Maya muttered, staring at the crumpled piece of paper in her hand. Her father’s “Get It Done Before I’m Gone” list. He’d always been so organized, so…efficient. Now she was the one having to deal with his unfinished business.

“Bake a perfect apple pie.” “Learn to play chess.” “Tell Maya she’s the best daughter a man could ask for.” She scoffed, her voice low. A perfect apple pie? He never even cooked! He’d always preferred to order in.

She crumpled the paper in her fist, her knuckles turning white. This whole thing was a colossal waste of time. She tossed the list into the recycling bin, the action a small act of defiance. This was ridiculous.
