The silence of the library was almost deafening, broken only by the rhythmic tap-tap-tapping of Mrs. Miller’s fingernails against the wooden desk. She was reviewing overdue book notices, a task she generally loathed. A courier presented a parcel. She took the package with a forced smile. A small, ornate music box, the lid intricately carved with a scene of a reading child. A card, simply: "Thank you. - David." She closed her eyes, a sharp pang in her chest. David, the boy who'd spent more time doodling than reading.
