"Ugh!" Amelia tossed the flowers onto the already cluttered entryway table. Gerbera daisies. Cheerful, brightly colored gerbera daisies. Without a card. She resisted the urge to kick the mail carrier’s bin as she went through the rest of the mail, which she did with an extra amount of force.

Her head throbbed. This had been going on for weeks. Someone, a phantom benefactor, was sending her flowers, making a mystery out of her life. She ran a hand through her hair, tangling it further. The sheer absurdity of it was making her pulse race.

She grabbed a pair of pruning shears, a sharp metallic click accompanying her actions. The daisy stems felt flimsy as she trimmed them. She crammed them into a chipped coffee mug, knowing that the bright blooms would soon wilt and die.
