The phone rang. It was her agent. “Great news, Emily! The publisher loved your… I mean, *Kai’s* novel. They’re thinking of a movie deal!” A coldness spread through Emily's veins. It was like someone had poured ice water down her spine.

She stared at the open laptop, the glowing screen illuminating the page. The novel. A fictionalized version of their lives, their relationship, their most intimate moments. Her privacy, violated. Her life, for public consumption.

She slammed the laptop shut with a loud *thwack*. The sound reverberated in the hollow stillness of her apartment. She felt herself growing tense. She walked to the window, staring out at the street below, the cars and people seeming far away.
