The opening night of his art show was supposed to be a triumph. Instead, Mark felt a hollow ache. He had seen the tattoo on the way in. It was a man, standing by the bar, and his work was emblazoned across the man's chest.

He smiled and gave the man a handshake. Then he walked away and turned to the open window. It was a cool night, but he felt a sheen of sweat on his forehead.

He looked back into the crowded gallery. People mingled, wine glasses clinked, and his work was everywhere. But the thought of that one tattooed chest felt like a deep, stinging betrayal.
