The constant hammering had become a personal affront to David. He was attempting to work from home, trying to focus on his spreadsheets, but the noise was a relentless irritant. He felt a throbbing ache behind his eyes.

He imagined the interior of the house, the walls being knocked down, the new, open-plan kitchen, the polished hardwood floors. A place where everything was organized and streamlined. He'd lived in his house for over fifteen years, with peeling wallpaper and a perpetually unfinished basement.

He slammed his laptop shut. He was never going to get any of his tasks done. He stalked to the window, watching the workers move effortlessly about the site. He needed a break, a long one.
