Gemotions

The bell above the door chimed, announcing her arrival. Chloe felt a tremor run through her. The ring. Her grandmother’s ring. The one she’d always imagined wearing, the one her mother had always said she would get. But her mother had given it to her sister instead.

Chloe approached the counter cautiously. The ring, sitting there in its little velvet box, seemed to mock her. She felt a burning sensation behind her eyes. Why had it ended up here, in this dusty, forgotten place? How had it been reduced to this?

She stared at the ring, the sparkling diamond taunting her. Her sister, living her perfect, charmed life, probably wouldn't even know it was missing.
