The pawn shop felt like a labyrinth of broken promises. Olivia’s hand trembled slightly as she approached the display case. There it was: a ring with a large sapphire, set in a platinum band. It was a replica of the ring her grandfather had given his wife. The real ring had been lost years ago. Her older sister had it. She’d always wanted a ring just like it.

A wave of frustration washed over her. She felt a burning sensation in her stomach. Why had the original ring been lost? Why couldn’t she, just once, be the one to have something like this?

She studied the ring carefully, a knot forming in her throat. She knew it wouldn't be the same as the original, but she wanted it, needed it, just to feel like her sister.
