Gemotions

The pungent smell of the pawn shop made Henry's stomach churn. He spotted it across the room: a heavy, ornate ring, set with a large, square-cut emerald. The one his grandfather had worn. His brother inherited it.

He moved toward the display case, his gaze fixed on the ring. He felt a familiar hollowness, a sense of being overlooked. He felt the urge to prove something. He felt the urge to possess it.

He imagined his brother's satisfaction at having such a valuable item. The thought grated on him, a constant, nagging irritation. He wanted to snatch it, to prove he was worthy, too. He took a deep breath, fighting the sudden urge to smash the glass.
