He’d always wanted a dog. Now, the new fence meant he *could* get one. But, seeing the perfect structure, the fresh, clean wood, he felt a strange reluctance. His own yard suddenly seemed too small, too neglected.

He found himself scrutinizing every imperfection in his own property. Every weed, every crack in the pavement. His head throbbed as he watched the new neighbors chat and laugh in their immaculate space.

He poured himself a large glass of whiskey, a sour taste coating his tongue. He was sure he could have had it. If only. He just wished he could find the same happiness.
