The clinic felt sterile and empty without Dr. Anya Sharma. The new intern, a fresh-faced kid straight out of med school, was already making the rounds, but it wasn't the same. Her absence felt like a gaping hole, a void in his professional life. Mark picked up his stethoscope, recalling the times he'd asked for her advice. He had always depended on her.

He slammed the file back down on the desk. He hadn’t even realized she was thinking of retiring. He was the last person to know. A red flush crept up his neck, and he felt a sharp stab of something resembling fury.

He started furiously checking his emails, scrolling through all of them, looking for an explanation, for an apology. Maybe he would find a clue. His movements were jerky and frantic. He didn't find anything.
