He stared at the job offer email on his laptop, a wave of nausea washing over him. Congratulations. He knew he should be happy, overjoyed even. But all he felt was this dull, persistent ache in his chest.

He re-read the email, each word a painful reminder of what he hadn't achieved. He'd poured his heart and soul into this, sacrificing everything for a chance. And now, seeing his friend had won the role, was like a physical blow.

He closed the laptop, the screen reflecting his own distorted expression. He imagined his friend, celebrating, already planning his future. He sat, staring at the screen and he felt a burning in his eyes. He got up and looked at his reflection in the mirror, and the sight repulsed him.
