He saw them before she did, across the bustling dance floor. Chloe’s hand instinctively tightened around her date’s arm. The music, which had moments before been infectious, now felt like a taunt. There he was, Mark, looking impossibly handsome in his tailored suit, chatting animatedly with the best man.

She pretended to be utterly absorbed in her drink, her gaze fixed on the ice cubes swirling in her glass. Every time Mark laughed, Chloe felt a tiny sting in her chest, a phantom pain that resonated deep within. She wanted to scream.

"You alright?" her date asked, concern etched on his face. Chloe forced a smile. "Fine," she choked out, then quickly turned away, feigning sudden interest in the floral arrangements.
