The air conditioning hummed in the small, sparsely furnished apartment. I slumped onto the threadbare couch as Mark, my childhood friend, launched into a detailed account of his “global marketing role.” His words were a carefully constructed narrative of power and influence. I watched him gesticulate. He mentioned exotic locations and high-profile clients, his voice filled with a subtle, yet undeniable, pride. I felt a familiar discomfort in my gut.

I picked at the worn fabric of the couch, avoiding his gaze. The silence between his pronouncements was deafening, filled with a heavy sense of inadequacy. My own life, I realized, seemed small and insignificant by comparison. I felt my hands ball up into fists.

“And then, they offered me a promotion,” he concluded, his voice triumphant.

I just stared blankly.
