The ringing phone jolted Clara awake. It was late, and she groggily reached for it. It was from a private number, a number she didn't recognize. She hesitated, then picked it up.

"Hello?"

Static crackled on the other end, followed by a muffled voice, then abruptly the call ended. She sat up in bed, heart racing. Later, she saw her husband, Daniel, in the kitchen, a phone in his hands.

Her eyes narrowed. "Who was that?"

He looked up, startled. His brow furrowed. "What? Oh, just someone who had the wrong number." He didn't meet her eyes.

Clara stood, her mind a whirlwind of suspicion, the unease spreading through her body. "Really?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper. He’d barely looked at her.
