The silence in the car was suffocating. Sarah gripped the steering wheel so tightly her knuckles were white. Her husband, Ben, had been on the phone again, voice barely audible, face tight with something she couldn't identify. He'd been doing it more and more, always with a faraway look in his eyes.

He finally spoke, breaking the tension. "Sorry, that was work."

She kept her eyes on the road. "Right." The word tasted bitter on her tongue.

He reached out, placing a hand on her arm. She flinched, pulling away slightly.

"You don't believe me, do you?" he asked, his voice low.

"Does it even matter?" The words escaped before she could stop them. The air was charged.
