The attic air hung thick and dusty, catching in Maya’s throat. A trunk, bound in cracked leather, sat in the corner. Her mother had requested she find it, something about old photographs. Maya had wanted to refuse, wanted to be anywhere else. But she relented.

Her mother's elementary school self was displayed in vibrant construction paper and perfect handwriting.
