Her breath hitched in her chest as the coach announced the team. She'd expected this, of course. Yet, the confirmation that she was not chosen still felt like a punch.

The air in the room seemed to thicken, making it difficult to breathe. The faces of the athletes who were selected blurred, their excitement a wave of noise and color that overwhelmed her senses.

She wanted to scream, to stamp her feet, to throw something. Instead, she stood perfectly still, her hands clenched so tightly that her nails were digging into her palms. She bit her lip and fought back the tears that threatened to spill.
