"Confirmation required." The screen flashed at her. It was from Ben, the boy who'd laughed at her attempts at art, who’d mocked her dreams of being a writer. Now, his face was displayed, beaming, beside a photo of a large house and a smiling woman.

She felt a wave of dizziness wash over her. She knew she shouldn't look, but she clicked on his profile anyway. His life seemed perfect. A successful career, a loving family. A wave of nausea began.

She needed to prove something to herself. She immediately picked up her phone and started scrolling through job listings, her fingers flying across the screen with a sudden, desperate energy.
