The elevator ride felt interminably long. David, usually affable, barely acknowledged Michael’s presence. Michael was whistling, humming a jaunty tune. He’d just gotten a promotion, and David had overheard the salary details through the office grapevine.

David stared at the numbers scrolling above the door. The feeling in his gut was a dull ache. He knew Michael wasn't inherently more talented, just luckier, that was all. He'd deserved that promotion. He’d put in the time.

He forced a tight smile as they exited the elevator. "Congratulations, Michael," he managed, his voice sounding flat and unnatural even to his own ears. He quickened his pace, hoping to get to his desk before the wave of… whatever this was… overwhelmed him.
