The phone on John's desk rang. He picked it up with a heavy sigh. Another complaint. Another problem. He dealt with these issues all day, every day. It felt like nobody appreciated the work he did.

He glanced over at the cubicle next door, where the new hire, Jessica, was laughing on the phone. Laughing! He knew, from a casual conversation with HR, that Jessica was making considerably more than he was, despite having no experience.

His jaw clenched. He stared at the ceiling, trying to calm the pulsing in his temples. He imagined all the things he could have with that extra money, things he *deserved*. He cut the call short. He needed a walk.
