Gemotions

The chipped paint of the rocking horse at the yard sale seemed to mock Amelia. Next to it, propped up against a cardboard box overflowing with discarded toys, sat a familiar face. It was Barnaby, her childhood bear. She hadn't seen him in… well, decades. A knot formed in her stomach. She knew, with a certainty that stung, that her sister, Clara, had been the one to pack him away. Clara, always so good at keeping things, at maintaining order and memories.

Amelia’s fingers twitched. She pictured Clara, probably with a perfectly organized linen closet, a life of flawless comfort. The woman selling Barnaby quoted a price so low it made Amelia’s jaw tighten. She fumbled for her wallet, trying to seem casual, even though her heart hammered against her ribs.

“He's seen better days, huh?” the woman remarked, gesturing to the bear's worn fur. Amelia forced a smile. "Yes, well. He's… charmingly vintage." She paid, snatched Barnaby, and walked away, the unspoken history of their shared childhood a heavy weight on her shoulders.
