He found the card nestled amongst the bills and junk mail. He flipped it over, a frown etching itself onto his face. He recognized the floral design, the same one his ex-girlfriend always used. His best friend’s birthday wasn't for months. He crumpled the card in his fist, the paper crackling. He could feel the familiar sting behind his eyes.

He tossed it in the trash, then immediately retrieved it. He smoothed the creases, feeling a wave of nausea. He missed the way she used to look at him, the way she made him feel. He hated that she had the gall to send this, to continue to take up space in his thoughts. He threw the card in the trash again, and this time, he left it.
