The invitation felt like a physical weight in his pocket. Michael hadn’t thought about high school in years. Now, a flood of memories – mostly unpleasant – crashed over him. He felt an undeniable urge to compare and contrast his life with his peers.

He slammed his car door, the sound echoing in the empty parking lot. His job was alright, but it was just a job. He imagined the conversations, the boasts, the subtle judgments. His achievements seemed pale in comparison.

He felt a tightness in his throat, a burning sensation in his stomach. He wasn't particularly happy with his current life. He wasn't sure if he ever would be. He needed to avoid confrontation. He needed to disappear. He thought of driving, just driving, far away from all of it.
