The elegant script of the invitation felt cold and judgmental in her hands. She crumpled it and then smoothed it out. The ten year mark. The names of the organizing committee felt like a challenge, a reminder of the life she could've had.

She glanced around her apartment. It wasn't bad. It wasn't what she would have wanted. There was a hollow ache in her chest. Her thoughts turned to her ex-boyfriend, who would probably be there with someone who was better than her.

She went to the bathroom and looked in the mirror. She ran her fingers through her hair, looking for faults. She saw the lines around her eyes, a testament to sleepless nights. The need to start all over again was compelling, a desire she knew was probably unattainable. She ripped the invitation and discarded it into the trash. The event was only a distant thought now.
