The old house was a shell of its former self. He walked around it once. The roof was missing in some places, but he still remembered the way the sunlight would stream into the living room every morning. The new owners were very kind, he supposed, but he wanted this house to himself.

He’d spent his entire life there. Every holiday, every birthday, every single moment. Now, it was going. He'd wanted to buy it, but they chose a different buyer. He could barely breathe.

He stood for a long time, watching the workers gather their equipment. The sun was setting, casting long shadows. He felt a profound sense of loss, a bottomless void that no new house could ever fill. He’d lost something he couldn’t get back.
