The gala was supposed to be a celebration of literary achievement. For Theo, it was a purgatory. He was seated at a table, surrounded by chattering admirers of the guest of honor, Victor Sterling, Theo’s former hero. Accusations of plagiarism had surfaced about Sterling’s work. Theo knew all the details.

He stared at the man, the very image of success and recognition. Theo was trapped in a silent, inner turmoil. He barely touched his food. His jaw ached.

As Sterling regaled the audience with tales of his creative process, Theo felt a wave of icy indifference. He stood, excused himself, and walked outside, the fresh air a welcome relief. He felt a potent need to run, to escape the manufactured joy, the false accolades. The evening had left him feeling utterly, completely… empty.
