He’d already bought the books, signed the lease on an apartment. Now, the emails started. The scholarship was going to someone else. He felt a tidal wave of anger, a rage he couldn’t contain.

He drove past the university, the imposing buildings mocking him with their grand facades. He saw the other recipient, surrounded by people, their faces full of smiles.

He slammed his fist against the steering wheel, the metal groaning under the force. The injustice of it all pulsed through him. He imagined ripping the congratulatory note to shreds, the words now nothing more than an insult.
