The glow of the phone screen reflected in David's glasses as he scrolled through the photos. His son, Leo, had a secret girlfriend. A beautiful girl, judging by the pictures. He felt a sting, a physical ache in his chest. A sudden wave of heat enveloped him.

He slammed the phone on the table. The sudden noise startled his wife, who looked at him with concern. David abruptly stood up, needing to move. The walls of their living room seemed to be closing in.

He went outside, pacing the driveway. He watched his neighbor’s son working on his car, laughing with friends. He suddenly found himself wishing that he knew something, anything about his own son’s inner world.
