He stared at the email again. "RSVP for Michael's Birthday Bash!" The subject line screamed from his inbox, mocking him. Liam’s own birthday was the same day, a fact that had seemed coincidental until now. He’d meticulously planned a low-key BBQ, with burgers and beer in his backyard.

A coldness settled in his stomach. Michael, of course, was having a massive party at a rented mansion, complete with a pool and a professional bartender. Liam ran his hand through his hair, a nervous gesture he hadn't realized he was doing. He felt a prickling sensation on his skin, like he was being watched.

Liam walked to his fridge and grabbed a beer. He stared at the can, his mind racing. He thought of all the people who would be at Michael’s, laughing, enjoying themselves. He pictured his own party, the sparse turnout, the awkward silences. He couldn't shake the feeling of being…left behind.

He didn't reply to Michael’s email. He deleted it. Then, he went to the grocery store and bought a single frozen pizza. He ate it straight from the box, sitting on his couch, the volume on the television turned up loud.
