The text message flashed on his phone: "Party at Jake's on the 17th!" Michael sighed, running a hand through his hair. His own birthday was also on the 17th. He had planned a small get-together at his apartment with close friends.

A sharp jab of discomfort pierced him. Jake, predictably, was throwing a massive bash at a trendy nightclub, complete with VIP access and a guest list that was the talk of the town. Michael's intimate gathering felt…insignificant.

He found himself irritable and short-tempered with his friends in the days leading up to his birthday. He snapped at them for small things. He started making excuses for why he wouldn't be able to celebrate at his planned small dinner. He started to distance himself.

On the actual day, Michael didn’t reply to any texts, stayed in, and stared at his phone. He turned off the ringer, and even turned off the screen.
