He found himself staring at the publisher's website, clicking through the "About Us" section. He was seeking any hint of what they looked for. He found it difficult to breathe, as if someone had tightened a band around his chest.

The editor's name, the one who had rejected his manuscript, was plastered across the front page, smiling widely. He remembered her comments, now memorized, and found himself running them again and again through his mind, as if he could change them somehow. He wanted to throw his phone across the room.

He stood up and began pacing, feeling a restless energy thrumming through him. He went to the window, watching the rain streak down the glass, feeling as if he were separated from the world by the cold of the window.
