The phone slipped from her grasp, landing face-up on the polished wood floor. Her eyes widened, seeing the reply: “Glad you had a good day!” It wasn't to her. The message had been sent to her boyfriend, Ben, from his coworker, Jessica. A cold knot formed in her stomach.

She picked up the phone, her hands shaking slightly. She quickly glanced at Ben’s recent texts, seeking reassurance, a hint of wrongdoing. Finding nothing, she closed the phone with a snap.

Later, she found herself picking at the hem of her shirt, staring at the television without seeing anything. The quiet of the apartment amplified the unsettling thoughts in her head. She kept imagining them, laughing, sharing a joke she wasn’t privy to.
