The world seemed to shrink around me as I listened to Professor Anya’s farewell speech at the department meeting. I stared at her, her face animated, her voice full of excitement. She was leaving for a fellowship in Paris. Paris! I, on the other hand, was still struggling to get my research published.

I clutched my notepad, the paper crinkling under my grip. The congratulatory applause felt like a physical blow. When she turned towards me during the post-speech reception, a warm smile on her face, I found myself retreating, a mumbled excuse escaping my lips.

I watched her from the periphery, surrounded by other students. I felt a burning sensation in my chest. I felt my face flush.
