"Great news about David, everyone!" Mr. Henderson announced at the weekly team meeting. A chorus of congratulations filled the room. Michael, however, felt a strange pressure in his chest. He managed a strained smile, his jaw tight.

He found himself avoiding David's eye, unable to meet the man's gaze. He was suddenly critical of everything: David’s choice of tie, his overly enthusiastic tone, even the way he held his pen. He started nitpicking at his reports, searching for some minor error to use as ammunition.

At lunch, he retreated to his desk, picking at his food. He suddenly felt a need to change his desk chair, to replace the monitor, to reorganize. Anything to feel in control.
