He could feel his pulse hammering against his temples. When the manager announced that Lisa would be taking the promotion, Ben's shoulders slumped. He felt his face flush. He was sure everyone could see the sudden disappointment etched on his expression.

He started avoiding Lisa. When she spoke to him, his responses were clipped, curt. He found himself picking at the imperfections of her work, highlighting errors he'd usually let slide.

He skipped the after-work drinks, where Lisa, he was sure, would be the center of attention. He went home and angrily watched a movie, the plot of which he couldn’t recall the next day.
