The letter. Another blow. She crushed it in her hand. The sweet scent of freshly mown grass drifted in from the park across the street, where the families picnicked, their laughter a constant reminder of everything she lacked.

She slammed her fist against the table, the wood vibrating. The notice was a cruel joke.

She stalked to the window, watching the scene below. She felt a burning need to lash out, to scream, to ruin their perfect day.

She sank onto the couch, the worn fabric offering no comfort.
