The musty smell of the antique desk filled Daniel’s nostrils as he pulled out the letter. His father's handwriting, even in a draft, was impeccable. The words were a cascade of praise, for a job Daniel had always dismissed as mundane. Now, reading his father’s words of regret, he felt a sting in his eyes.

He’d always felt like the black sheep. His father’s expectations, a heavy blanket. The letter revealed a vulnerability he'd never seen before, a hidden longing for something more. Daniel was confused.

Daniel walked to the window, the letter still clutched in his hand. The setting sun cast long shadows, mimicking the one he was beginning to feel.
