He watched her from the window as she packed her car. Every item she placed inside represented a memory, an shared experience, a piece of him that was being taken away. He clenched his fists, nails digging into his palms. Her departure, an event he’d known was coming, still felt like a punch to the gut.

He wanted to run outside, to beg her to stay. He wanted to scream at the sky, to protest the injustice of it all. Instead, he just stood there, a prisoner of his emotions, watching the last of her belongings disappear from his sight. He felt a strange emptiness inside, a cavern that threatened to swallow him whole. His throat felt tight, and he bit down on his lip, tasting blood.
